Video of the Week 4/22

Got an amazing piece for you. I think this one needs a little explanation before putting it on. This is an awesome sand drawing from Ukrainian artist Kseniya Simonova, performed on the Ukrainian version of 'America's Got Talent', or 'Britain's Got Talent' (seeing as they originated it).

Now a little context, what you're about to see is a depiction of Ukraine during the Nazi invasion of World War II. It is said that ¼ (25%) of the Ukrainian population was lost due to the invasion. For a little American context, this moment in history is burned into the strong Ukrainian identity much like a 9/11 or a Pearl Harbor; but only perhaps more so. Its perhaps equivalent to slavery and Jim Crow to us Black Americans. The Ukraine is a small region; a small nation, with a tight identity. Thus, there's little wonder why Miss Simonova's work of art leaves such an emotional impact on the audience watching. For you Metallica fans, you'll hear a little rendition of 'Nothing Else Matters' in there too!

At the end, what she writes is translated "You're forever with us".

By the way, Kseniya Simonova did go on to win the competition. Check it out.
