The Abstract Beauty of the Art I've Never Liked

Art is relative.

I had to check myself earlier. Every now and then I'll go on a rant against today's brand of music and the fact that it is more of a 'brand' than it is art. I never thought such lack of talent and creativity would ever get this far in the realm of music. I remember railing 15 years ago about the infiltration of wack rappers in the indusrty and all the purist promising that a 'Real Hip Hop revival " would return to the game. 15 years later, the lack of lyricism seems to be at an all time high.

What the hell is going on? Seems like lyrics are dying in favor of the "Cat in the Hat" nursery rhyming. It also seems like real vocal talent is giving way to the auto-tune, and real songwriting is being replaced by simple minded crap only to get clubs poppin or bodies grinding.
Where has all the true artistic talent gone in the music industry?

But that's just it. That's how it is with art..any kind of art. Art is lovely because it literally has no rules; and sometimes, that's where we purists and lovers of the craft get mixed up. I don't know. Maybe its because we put so much work and energy into our art. Maybe its because we live and breathe and use the talent God gave us to enhance this art; only to turn around and see some no talent, lazy somebody get the attention and the pub...and in many cases, the pay. But the reality is that with any kind of art, everything is fair game. And when the only rule is that "beauty is in the eye if the beholder", what's "wack" really might not be all that "wack"!

Art has been down this road before. New, evolving brands, forms, styles of art that are crushed and labeled by the established and popular way of being fraudulent fake excuses of artistic expression. Hip Hop saw this day 30 years ago; not just the music, but the other forgotten components of the art: grafitti and break dancing. Hard rock and Metal had their turn right around that same time by their Rock 'n Roll purists. Never mind that Rock 'n Roll definately had their day 20 years earlier.

We can go on and on. From modern dance and choreography, Xtreme sports, body art, illustrative art, and fashion design, all kinds of new forms of artistic expressions have been or are being delegitimized by their established contemporaries constantly.

So if it bothers us that someone with a supposed lack of artistic talent profits from a work that we could consider crappy, that's just the game. Whether its music, painting, or designing; that's the way it is. In the case of music, nobody said you had to be a great singer or songwriter to be an artist. All you gotta be able to do is create a sound, and an image that people like and enjoy. Art by nature is abstract and requires no real skill set, but only expression.

Still doesn't mean I have to like it.
